Pterostilbene is a chemical cousin of the of the more popular of the two resveratrol. Both are naturally-occurring, with trace amounts in grapes, wine, blueberries and other berries. Both are a kind of natural antibiotic, A number of studies have reported memory improvement and neuro-protective effects of blueberries in humans and in animals but seldomly these studies has tried to identify whether pterostilbene was the active agent in blueberries and if it were responsible for the benefits of neuro-protection, anti-inflammatory and anti-aging properties. Resveratrol is a natural phytoestrogen with neuroprotective properties. Polyphenolic compounds including resveratrol exert in vitro antioxidant, anti‐inflammatory, and antiamyloid effects. Resveratrol and its derivative pterostilbene are able to cross the blood‐brain barrier and to influence brain activity. The present short review summarizes the available evidence regarding the effects of these polyphenols on pathology and cognition in animal models and human subjects with dementia.

The affects of Pterostilbene as a anti-carcinogenic As a small molecule, pterostilbene has no problem gaining access into cancer cells. It appears to be a cancer doesn’t agree with molecules that are small enough to enter the it’s cells—It damages a cancer cell membrane and DNA and induces death signals allowing completely biodegradation of the Cancer. This was recently published with studies including both breast and prostate cancer cells; In another recent breast cancer cell study, pterostilbene caused the energy-producing system within the cancer cell to malfunction and generate massive amounts of free radicals instead of energy, resulting in breast cancer cell death. Similar findings have now been demonstrated with pancreatic cancer cells. Pterostilbene has also been shown to inhibit colon cancer, lung cancer, liver cancer, and skin cancer.

In a recent study with bladder cancer cells pterostilbene was shown for the first time to activate the autophagy process “ Autophagy “ does the allowing of orderly degradation and recycling of cellular components wherein a cell is commanded to eat itself, thereby inducing cell death. In normal health, autophagy is used to help keep a cell clean, which prevents cancer. It is amazing, that the intelligence to help healthy cells and and assist in neutralizing cancer cells exists, by useful mechanisms like autophagy.

Pterostilbene also benefits cardiovascular health One way that phytochemicals anthocyanins help protect the blood vessels from inflammation is through their antioxidant activity. Reactive oxygen species and free radicals are constantly being generated in the body, through poor diet and sleep and these chemicals react with and damage the molecules and cells around them, they scatter about looking for electrons. Damage caused by free radicals triggers the body to initiate inflammatory processes, which can lead to cardiovascular disease. Antioxidants react with the free radicals before they can cause damage by lending them an electron and neutralize them; therefore they prevent direct damage from free radicals and they also prevent damage by preventing inflammation.
